Midfielders

Steven Gerrard
(England, Liverpool, 29)

Steven Gerrard was one of the most scoring midfielders in the game during last season. He found the net 24 times in official matches for Liverpool, with 16 of them in the Premier League. Gerrard is not only a scorer; with his pace and power he is capable of stopping opponents as well. He forms a formidable combination with striker Fernando Torres. How important these two are for Liverpool, has been illustrated recently, with The Reds struggling in the current campaign due to injuries of both players.

Andrés Iniesta
(Spain, Barcelona, 25)

2009 record: Champions League, Primera División, Spanish Cup, European Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, World Cup for Clubs.

Andrés Iniesta makes his debut in the FIFA/FIFPro World XI. Lightning quick and very smart, the 25-year old can be inventive and spectacular. He does not score very much, but together with Xavi he is the engine on Barcelona's midfield. He proved that with 9 assists in the Primera División. Last season Iniesta made one of the most important goals of Barça, by scoring against Chelsea in stoppage time, a goal that brought his team the ticket to the Champions League final.

Xavi Hernández
(Spain, Barcelona, 29)

2009 record: Champions League, Primera División, Spanish Cup, European Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, World Cup for Clubs.

Xavi is hardly the man who catches the eye with spectacular moves or goals, but if Barcelona has one midfield maestro, then its him. The Catalan-born is the conductor of the team that was the best in Spain, Europe and the World in 2009. Xavi always acts cool, calm and collected, he never shows his nerves but almost always shows his skill and vision with exquisite passes and ball control and interferences. In 2009 Xavi demonstrated with both Barcelona and the Spanish national team that it was no coincidence that he was voted Best Player of the 2008 European Championships.
